Celtic 3-2 Real Betis: Turnbull earns Scots rare win over Spanish foes

Celtic ended their Europa League adventure by halting a dismal run against Spanish teams with a dramatic 3-2 win over Real Betis.

There was no Group G final-day reckoning, with places from top to bottom already decided with a game to spare, so Thursday s clash was all about playing for pride.

Betis are heading through to the knockout play-offs as runners-up, with Bayer Leverkusen having won the group, while third-placed Celtic have Europa Conference League knockout play-offs ahead of them.

Celtic had gone seven games without a win against Spanish opposition, but goals from Stephen Welsh, Ewan Henderson and David Turnbull, with a winner from the penalty spot in the 78th minute, saw off the LaLiga visitors to Parkhead.

We end our campaign with a win at …

Williams signs new Swansea deal

Swansea City defender Ashley Williams has signed a new three-year deal with the club.

The 28-year-old s fresh terms, which will keep him with the Welsh outfit until the summer of 2015, make him the latest player to commit his future to the Premier League side following goalkeeper Michel Vorm in September.

The new deal caps off a memorable October for Williams after he was handed the Wales captain s armband in place of Aaron Ramsey by national boss Chris Coleman.

I m delighted to get it signed. It s dragged on a bit but I m happy to finally sign and be part of this team. I m enjoying it here; it s a great place to be at the moment, Williams told the club s official website.

If we continue to work as hard as we have been, we will continue to go forward a…

Ronaldo honoured to be in Ballon d´Or trio

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo said he was honoured to be chosen in the final list of candidates for the Ballon d Or.

The Portuguese ace was selected along with Barcelona s Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi on the back of a fantastic season at club level where his 46 goals in 38 league games helped Real Madrid claim La Liga.

Ronaldo will be hoping his efforts last season will be enough to pip his rivals to the award that he last won in 2008.

For me it is an honour to be a candidate for the Ballon d Or and for FIFA s World 11, and I am very proud, he told Los Blancos official website.

They are two very special awards and I think that being amongst the candidates is primarily the result of the hard work and support of my team mates, both at Real Ma…

Terry out for three weeks

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed John Terry will be sidelined for three weeks with a knee injury.

Initial fears were that the centre-back could have suffered a longer-term injury as his leg got trapped and twisted when he collided with Liverpool s Luis Suarez in their 1-1 draw on Sunday.

The England international looked in severe pain and was stretchered off the Stamford Bridge pitch, however MRI scans after the clash showed no significant damage to the cruciate ligaments.

The Chelsea boss has now revealed that the 31-year-old may only be missing for a few weeks, but he insisted that any length of time without their skipper is a big blow.

With him we re looking at approximately three weeks out, fortunately it s not as bad as we first tho…

Mourinho, Guardiola earn Ferguson plaudits

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has lavished praise on the two leading candidates to succeed him Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho.

The 70-year-old, who will have a huge influence on the identity of his successor at Old Trafford, highlighted the qualities of the Real Madrid supremo, who he repeatedly faced and was occasionally thwarted by when the Portuguese was in charge of Porto and Chelsea.

Jose is very intelligent, he has charisma, his players play for him, and he is a good looking guy, said Ferguson as he talked to academics at Harvard Business School in Boston.

I think I have most of those things, too, apart from his good looks.

He s got a confidence about himself, saying We ll win this and I m the Special One .

Leicester City 3 Liverpool 1: Vardy at the double in reminder of Ranieri´s glory

Jamie Vardy and Leicester City provided a thrilling reminder of the form that took them to the Premier League title last season four days too late for dethroned boss Claudio Ranieri, as a limp Liverpool were dispatched 3-1 at the King Power Stadium.

A home crowd peppered with banners paying tribute to the amiable Italian, who was sacked last Thursday following a run of five consecutive top-flight defeats, had no cause to approach mutiny as their side located an intensity and drive sorely lacking over recent weeks.

Vardy followed his strike in the 2-1 Champions League loss to Sevilla last week with Leicester s first in the Premier League in 2017 and Danny Drinkwater displayed impeccable technique to net a sumptuous long-range second.

It got better in the second ha…

Frustrating night for Los Blancos / Image via thegurardian.com

It was a highly entertaining evening at Mestalla and an eventful match between home side Valencia and Real Madrid.

Gary Neville is still in search of his maiden La Liga win as Valencia boss, but former Manchester United defender will have every reason to be pleased with his team’s performance against the visitors from Madrid.

Rafa Benitez’s troops have opened the game in dominant fashion getting on the scoresheet after only 16 minutes through a wonderful team goal lead by Gareth Bale, the assist provider Cristiano Ronaldo and the finisher Karim Benzema.

Los Che demonstrated impressive composure to get back in the game, dominate the first-half and earn an equalizer from the penalty spot.
